In the lead up to any vacation, nails are a must on the to-do list. A Disney trip is no exception. Think about all those snack and drink photo opps; your nails had better be on point!
When Sarah and I went to the nail salon before our most recent trip, my sister understood the assignment. She had done her research and came with a cute ‘Disnified’ nail look. I was not as prepared but was inspired and had to think quickly on my feet. I decided to take inspiration from the Disney Bound culture. A simple and subtle ‘inspired by’ look that a true Disney lover would get.
If you aren’t familiar with Disney Bounders, they are incredible at building outfits that are inspired by various characters. Disney discourages actual character costumes at the parks, but there are no rules around ‘inspired by’ outfits. The outfit will typically start with a colour palette that speaks to the DNA of each character and evolves from there. We will get into our favourite Disney Bounder looks in another post, but let’s start with nails.
I chose Mickey as the character for my nail inspiration. His DNA Colour Palette is simple (iconic, even): red, black and yellow. I wanted the colours painted in the same order that Mickey would typically be sketched (see pic below). My lovely nail artist convinced me to add a second black nail and I’m grateful because he was right. Add in a tiny Mickey head silhouette and it really makes the pictures pop (see snack photo)!
This got me thinking about other characters and how you could bring them to life through colour. I considered a few of my favourites and thought about the DNA colour palettes for each one. I have come up with options for you to consider on your next trip. I had a lot of fun with this, the options are plentiful, don’t be overwhelmed! As I was writing this I thought about left and right hand combos as well. Chip and Dale, Mickey and Minnie, there are so many!!
If subtle isn’t your style and you want to level up on the Disney, then there are a ton of options. I went down an Etsy rabbit hole and found some other ideas. I lean towards a good Mickey head silhouette or a fun 80s vibe. If you aren’t finding inspiration here, then check out our Pinterest board; we’ve posted a lot of fun options for you to consider. Check back often because we’ll keep adding to it.
First up, classic, and sophisticated looks: think Mickey Ear silhouettes, tone on tone options, small, abstract and subtle:

Mickey Head + Star Wars: my two favourite things combined. The Mickey head made into other characters is ‘a thing’. Maybe Star Wars isn’t for you, but you’ll be amazed by how many different options exist incorporating your favourite character with the OG classic, (link here).
A little bit 80s. Enough said.
- Bright Purple and Teal – does it get any more 80’s: link here.
- Aviators and the OGs here.
- Totally Saved by the Bell vibesssssss. Time Out here.
If you are just getting to know me, I am like guacamole: extra. Embellishments really appeal to an inner part of my soul. Keep that in mind when you see the overly aggressive nail models in this part of the article. Choose your base colours and nail shape wisely people!
Lastly, I added this product to my cart. A Disney themed nail polish line? Yes please. Combine a Mickey head and an 80s neon colour palette and I am HOOKED. Disney or Bust it is! A-thank-you-very-much. Check it out here!! I would love to see your creative side as well.
Please share! I am open to inspiration, wherever it comes from.
