Disney mash

Okay, Socialites. Today we are going deep into our childhood time-waster to build our very own Disney Movie. We’ll be using the tried-and-true method that girls and boys from the 90’s used to very scientifically predict how their life would turn out (spoiler alert: the predictions didn’t come true).

MASH. Remember playing MASH??

It was always a tough day if you ended up in a shack without your favourite crush (sigh). I hope your luck turns out for you. If you aren’t familiar with this gem of a game, then let me break it down for you..

MASH is a game of elimination, if you will. Everyone grab a piece of paper and pencil! Check out the picture below for an example that you can use as a template as you plot out your Disney movie.

A fresh template, does anything compare?!? Actually my super cool Neon stationary does.

For my more process-driven Socialites here is a step by step:

  1. Draw a square in the middle of your page.
  1. At the top, print the word MASH
  • M = Castle
  • A = Apartment – think Rapunzel’s initial set-up
  • S = Shack – something akin to ‘in the forest’; 7 dwarfs style
  • H = House (Pretty sweet if it’s anything like the house from Encanto)

Now, for the following five categories, pick four of each:

  1. Category 1: Your love interest. Choose four Disney Princes or Princesses – obvi we need a love story for this fairytale!
  1. Category 2: Your loyal sidekick. Who is going to help you out of the inevitable jam in which you’ll find yourself? I am partial to Gus Gus, but there are so many great options.
  1. Category 3: The Disney Villain. Cruella has a flair for fashion, but Ursula can really sing for the soundtrack. It’s a tough one. Choose wisely.
  1. Category 4: Your soundtrack banger. What song will be on repeat for those kiddos (and adults, let’s be honest).
  1. Category 5: An obstacle to overcome. You didn’t think ‘Happily Ever After’ came easily, did you? A few examples of obstacles: protect your family, fall in love, find your gift or, simply, a glass slipper. This is YOUR movie; we don’t all need to struggle here.

Okay, now that you have your template set up, close your eyes and count to 5 while drawing a spiral from the center of the square. The number of lines in the spiral is your ‘number’ (see the template for an example; each notch equals one, my number was 4).

Starting at M and moving clockwise, count to your number and eliminate each item as you land on it. For example, because my number was four, the first item I crossed off was ‘H’. Then I started counting again at Eric and crossed off Beast (yes, I picked Beast, don’t @ me.). Eventually, you will end up with one selection left for each category and those items will form the basis of your custom Disney movie!

Ugh, shack.

My movie: Stromboli = the most terrifying villain of all time!! I have my work cut out for me. But Aladdin and I, we’ve got this (with Sebastian’s help). We will overcome Stromboli and our toxic family so that we can live happily ever after in our forest shack, riding off in to the sunset to the tune of ‘Nobody Like U’ from Turning Red.

Please share your movie with us! We will be doing this for a while. Super fun for those times when you need to return to childhood for a few minutes. Enjoy!
